Chapter Twelve

Alaric

It was our first day back at work since our trip. Everything had gone smoothly, and the groundwork was laid for everyone one who wanted to keep their jobs through the acquisition. It had been so important to Bridge, and I hadn’t been sure how feasible it was. Maybe I’d been listening to Lionel too much.

“Morning, Mr. Stanson.” I walked into his office, coffee in hand, as he was briefing Lionel and answering any questions he had.

Bridge and I hadn’t discussed what we were doing about work. I didn’t want to be a dirty little secret, but I also didn’t want to make things harder for him. It had been on the agenda for me to bring up last night, but after a ten-hour plane delay, the only conversations either of us was having was in our dreams.

That was why it surprised me when Lionel responded, “You can probably call him Bridge, now.” With a smile on his face and zero judgement. “’Bout time you two figured it out.”

He wasn’t wrong there.

Bridge shrugged, “Guess we were the only ones around here who didn’t know. There was even a pool,” he informed me.

“I thought you were his friend,” I scolded Lionel. “A true friend would’ve let us in on the bet so we could’ve finagled our way to victory.”

“Tell that to past me who lost sixty bucks. I thought for sure you were going to figure it out at the summer picnic. I’ve seen Bridge in shorts.”

“I missed it.” I reminded him. “My dad was having surgery.”

“I’m still mad at his piss-poor planning,” Lionel teased. I liked seeing him less frazzled about bottom line and more himself. Everyone reacted to stress differently, and I tried to remember that.

“I know. I told him next time to plan his appendicitis when my calendar was clear.”

“And to think I wore those shorts for nothing.” Bridge took a long sip of his coffee.

“Pics or it didn’t happen,” I quipped.

To my surprise, Lionel whipped out his phone and scrolled, turning it to face me. At first I wasn’t sure what to think about him having pictures of my guy in shorts on his phone. But once I saw the picture, I understood.

“I’m officially pissed at my dad now,” I chortled. “I want to see how you turned into this muddy mess.”

“Tug of war, and the other side cheated.” He set his cup down.

“The other side were kids, the oldest being eight.” Lionel could barely contain his laughter.

“There were fifteen of them and one me.” Bridge walked around his desk and over to me. “Now, close your eyes, Lionel. There’s something I need to do.”

He gave me a sweet kiss. “Good morning.”

“Morning.”

He brought his lips to my ears. “I missed you this morning.” A nip at my earlobe, and he was standing tall. “You can look again.”

“And that’s what it’s going to be like,” Lionel grumbled, but a grin teased at his lips.

“Pretty much,” Bridge bantered back. “Now, let’s work on the agenda for the official meeting announcing everything.
